MARTINS ALHO 8 | 0´PORTO
Target
Rehabilitation of an urban building, inserted in the Urban Rehabilitation Area of the Historic Center of Porto (classified as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1996), with a program that should provide 6 fractions of Housing (Penthouse, T2 eT1) and 2 fractions of Commerce.
Building | Pre-existence
Located in the heart of the Martins Alho quarter (no. 14026), it developed in a very irregular form, both at the planimetric and volumetric levels, showing successive changes and adaptations resulting from the urban transformations that were occurring in the area throughout the 19th century.
Project | Options
The special characteristics of the pre-existence, and the obligatory maintenance of its façades, were decisive for the architectural solution adopted, both in terms of constructive options and internal organization. The project sought to take advantage of this diversity through the use of half floors.
One of the ideas developed throughout the project, focused on the treatment of the reception space, stairs and common levels. We wanted these spaces to be a welcome moment in a environment of comfort. Let us not forget that this is the first contact to the inside of the building. The use of concrete as a structural element of steps and stairs, solid wood in the guards and lining of the steps and the zenithal light as natural lighting of the wall of masonry of century-old stone went to meet our will.
The intervention intends to value the creation of a modern and qualified housing and commerce offer, respecting the memory of the Building and the Historical Center of which it is a part.
